On Wednesday, August 19, something extraordinary happened on Glenrose Avenue in Altadena. After losing her home in the Eaton Fire, Phyllis finally opened the door to a new beginning.
Surrounded by family, friends, project partners and the SGV Habitat team, Phyllis and her loving family returned home to their newly rebuilt house on Glenrose Ave. It was more than a ribbon-cutting or the completion of a construction project. It was a survivor reclaiming her home, her neighborhood and a sense of what comes next.
Phyllis chose The Foothill Catalog’s beloved “Lewis” design for her new home—a place designed not simply to replace what was lost, but to become the setting for years of memories still to come.
The homecoming also marked another important achievement: the first completed Altadena rebuild undertaken with DSW Construction, a new and valued SGV Habitat partner. Their collaboration demonstrates what is possible when committed organizations, builders, volunteers, donors and community members come together with a shared purpose: to help Altadena rise again.
SGV Habitat made sure Phyllis’s story reached far beyond Glenrose Avenue. KABC, KCBS, KTLA and Spectrum News joined the celebration, capturing the emotional homecoming and sharing it with audiences throughout Southern California. The resulting coverage generated more than 2 million media impressions, shining a spotlight on the ongoing work of Eaton Fire recovery.
And Phyllis is not alone.
As of right now, SGV Habitat has twenty Eaton Fire rebuilds in various stages of completion, with many more homes planned.
Each house represents more than walls, windows and a roof. Each one represents a family coming home—and a community rebuilding its future.
Phyllis’s homecoming is a powerful reminder of why we do this work: when we rebuild a home, we help rebuild hope.
