As a mother, you pray that your children are healthy and will live their life to the fullest. Zuheerah, mother and grandmother, was heartbroken when her daughter Salihah had a stroke, leaving her wheelchair bound. After her stroke, Salihah needed full-time care, as well as help with her children, Zuheerah’s grandchildren.
Zuheerah’s house of 20 years did not function for Salihah’s needs. The doorways were not wide enough, and it was difficult for her to maneuver around the house. Because of this Salihah was limited to the living room and her bedroom. One day, she fell while taking a bath.
“I started to take Salihah to the gym to bathe her because they had better accessibility. It was really taxing, and I was exhausted,” Zuheerah recalled.
Thankfully, home repair donor support got Zuheerah and Salihah the help they needed. Two doorways were widened, a ramp was built in the back, a wheelchair-friendly sink and mirror were installed in their bathroom, and their bathtub was modified to give Salihah the relief she needed to bathe in her own home once again.
This new sense of independence improved Salihah’s mindset and quality of life. “The bathroom was made accessible for Salihah. It has changed her life. She can brush her hair and wash her teeth. This was something she couldn’t do on her own before,” Zuheerah said.
All of this was made possible because of the critical home repair program. Now Salihah has a better quality of life with a sense of independence and Zuheerah can focus on helping Salihah live life to the fullest.
