The Eaton Fire devastated parts of Los Angeles County earlier this year, leaving thousands displaced and countless families facing the emotional and financial challenge of rebuilding their lives. Many were uninsured, underinsured, or living on limited incomes, making recovery seem impossible.
At San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity (SGV Habitat), we know rebuilding takes more than hammers and nails — it takes community. Since January 2025, SGV Habitat has led long-term recovery efforts, bringing together volunteers, donors, and partners to rebuild not just homes, but hope.
“This is not just about rebuilding homes—it’s about restoring hope, stability, and a future. These homes represented generations of resilience and legacy. With this support, families can begin to rebuild more than walls—they will rebuild lives.”
-Bryan Wong, SGV Habitat CEO

The first rebuild: the Wood family’s home
On October 16, 2025, SGV Habitat officially began construction on its first full home rebuild in the Eaton Fire burn scar — the home of Kenneth and Carol Wood, long-time Altadena residents.
After losing their home of 40 years in the fire, the Woods are now seeing their dream come true as volunteers raise walls and rebuild their three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on Pine Street.
“People will never understand what it means to be able to live on that corner again,” said Kenneth. “Along with the pain, there has been a lot of gain… having this house rebuilt and the help we’re getting is teaching us something we never knew before.”
This marks the first of 25 homes SGV Habitat has committed to rebuilding in Altadena. With community support, the organization hopes to expand its capacity to rebuild up to 100 homes in the coming years.
Our progress so far
- In June 2025, the Altadena Builds Back Foundation awarded SGV Habitat a $4.55 million grant to rebuild 22 homes for underinsured homeowners in West Altadena.
- In partnership with the Foothill Catalog Foundation, SGV Habitat developed pre-approved home designs to help families rebuild faster while preserving Altadena’s architectural character — becoming the first organization to secure a rebuilding permit in the area.
- In collaboration with GER³ (Global Emergency Relief, Recovery & Reconstruction), SGV Habitat has supported families with smoke remediation, testing, and debris removal, allowing many to safely return home.
Partnerships that power recovery
SGV Habitat’s recovery efforts are made possible through strong community partnerships:
- Global Emergency Relief, Recovery & Reconstruction (GER³): Provided disaster-response expertise including testing, smoke remediation, and debris removal, while SGV Habitat managed repairs such as flooring, insulation, and appliance replacement. Together, they completed Mary’s home, the first restoration following the fire, with 12 more homes planned this year.
- A Sense of Home (ASOH): Furnished newly rebuilt and repaired homes with curated furniture and décor, ensuring families return to comfortable, welcoming spaces.
- Tam Ky Project: Donated $10,000 to support repairs for 20 homes and an additional $4,000 toward SGV Habitat’s first new home rebuild in Altadena — a powerful example of compassion reaching across borders.
Our ReStores: serving fire-affected families
Recovery doesn’t stop at construction sites — it continues in our Pasadena ReStore, where every purchase, donation, and volunteer shift helps power the rebuilding effort.
- Hosted six distribution events, serving 1,409 families with essential items such as mattresses, air purifiers, and furniture.
- Between March and October the ReStores have provided $89,964.68 in gift card sales to fire survivors.
- As of August 21, the Pasadena ReStore has provided more than 29,800 discounts to fire survivors, helping families rebuild affordably.
- Every sale supports SGV Habitat’s ongoing work, turning community shopping into tangible impact.
